Guide to Course - RN to MS in Nursing
The first step to becoming a registered nurse (RN) is completing an RN to MS in nursing degree program. In the US/Canada, this program is also known as the RN to BSN program. It is intended for nurses who wish to become one of the Registered Nurses (RNs) and are already employed in a health care setting.
Requirements
Most colleges that offer the RN to MS in nursing program have clinical requirements, which are typically fulfilled during the first two years of study. Students will normally be required to take clinical nursing experience, which will normally be undertaken at their own home institutions with local preceptor agreement. After these years of learning, students will normally need to pass an examination administered by the National Board for Professional and Ethical Nursing in order to obtain their RN to MS in nursing degree. Once these requirements are complete, students will usually be able to apply for their RN to MS in nursing position.
Colleges for MS in Nursing
There are many schools offering these programs for students to pursue. The first school to introduce this degree program was the University of Minnesota, which has been offering this degree for several decades. The RN to MS in nursing degree earned from this university is considered as one of the more comprehensive degrees in the United States. At the University of Minnesota, students get a comprehensive foundation in all aspects of nursing and are prepared for advanced degree programs. This includes courses on educational planning, patient care administration, basic nursing skills, administration of medication, research methods and ethics, interpersonal communication skills, medical terminology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology.
Other universities also offer these programs. At the University of California - Davis, the RN to MS in nursing degree is suitable for students who want to pursue a career in long-term care or skilled nursing facilities. At California State University, a MS in nursing program is offered by the Division of General Education within the College of Nursing. Unlike the other programs, the RN to MS in nursing program requires a four-year bachelor's degree. A minimum of a 3.5 GPA is required from students in order to be considered for acceptance into the program.
Some of these programs may also require that potential students have taken classes at the associate degree level or higher in a certain area. Students are allowed to pursue a bachelors or even a master's degree in nursing in the future as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. Other RN to MS in nursing programs require that students already have working experience in the field. However, experience is not always a requirement since many hospitals prefer to hire candidates who already have some hospital based experience.
For individuals who already have a nursing degree, some schools offer accelerated RN to MS in nursing programs so that students can pursue a full BSN or MS in nursing. An accelerated BSN or MS in nursing program involves a shorter time frame, typically two years, for completion. The first year of the program allows students to build a foundation and complete prerequisite courses. Students must still complete an internship in the second year of the program in order to be eligible to sit for the certification exam. Either way, an RN to MS in nursing degree can provide students with an excellent opportunity to advance their nursing career.
